Coady PhotographyAURORA, CO—JULY 17, 2010—Lepic-Morgan Partnership's Spit Curl Diva went off as the heavy favorite in Saturday's $25,560 Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge and did not disappoint racing fans at Arapahoe Park.
The sorrel filly took command shortly after leaving the gate and was driving at the wire to win by one length. Under jockey David Brown she completed the course in :19.380 seconds, a 107 speed index. The $12,015 winner's purse pushed her career earnings total to more than $561,000, but more importantly the win produced an invite to the $125,000 Guaranteed Merial Distaff Challenge Championship(G1) to be run November 19th at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans as part of the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night. Jody Brown was saddled the 4-year-old daughter of Spit Curl Jess to her fifth win in six starts this season. She won four straights including two stakes and a couple of track records at Remington Park before finishing third in the Junos Request Stakes on May 29th. The agile filly has won 13 of 26 starts. Corona For You, also a 4-year-old, dueled gamely but finished second for owners Romaldo Tarango and Hugo-Barron Sierra. The Corona For Me filly was ridden by Alejandro Luna for trainer Alejandro Chavez. She earned $5,112 for the effort. Grudgingly a neck back in third was Nevaeh racing for Mildred and Marcial Lujan. The Takin On The Cash 4-year-old is trained by Elliot Bachicha. She picked up $2,556 under jockey Elliot Bachicha, Jr. Completing the Merial Distaff field were Flash N Passion, Daddies Little Girl, Jess A Cooke, Ldscherry Cola Chick and Lady Fish. |
