The first major 2-year-old stakes event of the season features a field of 10 who qualified during 14 time trials here two weeks ago.
Spit Curl Duchess has been tabbed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the Grade 3, $326,000 Oklahoma Futurity, held every year since 1947, making it the longest running futurity in the sport. Spit Curl Duchess got the slight nod over a couple other qualifiers, including Adolph Tres Knockout who posted the top time during the trials. Owned by Elbert Brown of Seminole, Okla. and trained by Rodney Reed, Spit Curl Duchess, an Oklahoma-bred filly by SPIT CURL JESS from the Toast To Dash mare American Dove, will be ridden in the Oklahoma Futurity by leading jockey G.R. Carter. The filly’s strong connections weighed in her favor for Remington Park odds maker Jerry Shottenkirk. "Spit Curl Duchess is the slight favorite and probably rates an edge due to the success her rider G.R. Carter and trainer Rodney Reed have had here,” Shottenkirk said. “This is a wide-open event since these young Quarter Horses have had only one start each." Both Adolph Tres Knockout and Ivory Castle were made co-second choices on the morning-line at 4-1 odds. Adolph Tres Knockout is owned by Lawrence Puig of Laredo, Texas and is trained by Kenneth Griggs. The filly handled 300 yards during the March 5 trials in :15.328 seconds under jockey Paul Nieto who keeps the engagement for the final.
