Don Shugart PhotoFREDERICKSBURG, TX—JULY 21, 2012—In just his second career start, Spit Curl Jesse put on a big finish under jockey Thomas Ramirez to win the $37,300 TQHA Futurity at Gillespie County Fairground on Saturday afternoon.
The SPIT CURL JESS 2-year-old came into the race off a third place effort to fastest qualifier Perry Ellis Jr in the July 7 trials. Today the Michael Chavez trainee completed his 350 yard task in :17.617 seconds, a 94 speed index, while winning by a neck. The $13,055 winner's purse booster her career total to $13,225. Reyes C. Vasquez owns the brown gelding from the First Down Laveaux mare Linda Laveaux. Juan Escalante bred Spit Curl Jesse in Texas. Heavy post-time favorite and fastest qualifier Perry Ellis Jr could not hold off the winner, settling for $5,595 for second place. It was also the second start for the Mario Rodriguez owned and trained colt. Bred in Texas by Asas Limited, he posted an impressive 1 ½ length trial win in his first start. My Cold Corona finished a neck back in third to pickup $3,730 for owner Jose Oviedo. The homebred filly, trained by Angel Sanchez and ridden by Ricardo Aguirre. Spit Curl Jesse paid $15.60 to win. Completing the field were Christmas Clause, Mighty Grizzly Water, Legend Effort, Volcom Clearance, Bring Bac Silver, Cc Wants It All and Her Sisters Keeper.
