FIRST PRIZE SHAUNDA GETS STAKES WIN
IN EVANGELINE DOWNS DERBY SATURDAY

OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 16, 2013—The royally bred and lightly raced filly First Prize Shaunda scored her first career stakes win Saturday in the $50,000 Evangeline Downs Derby.

Under jockey Raul Ramirez, Jr. the 3-year-old filly raced over the 400 yards in :19.812 seconds, holding off stablemate Ronnie James by a neck. The $30,000 winner's purse swelled the Oklahoma-bred filly's earnings to more than $66,000.

Bred by Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith and owned by Mrs. Stanley, First Prize Shaunda came into the race off an impressive allowance win at Evangeline Downs in her first start this year on October 16. Prior to that the Pyc Paint Your Wagon filly finished last in the 2012 $1 million Texas Classic Futurity(G1) last fall after being fractious in the gate.

Heath Taylor conditions First Prize Shaunda who now has four wins seven career starts. He also trained her dam Grade 1 winner First Prize Leesa. The Mr Jess Perry mare won the Remington Park Futurity(G1) and earned $488,270. First Prize Shaunda is expected to make her next start in the $100,000-added Hialeah Derby trials on December 8.

Taylor also saddled runner-up Ronnie James for owner/breeder Brett Mennen. The Valiant Hero gelding is out of Jess A Lil Bit, by Feature Mr Jess. The graded stakes winner of seven races boosted his career earnings to nearly $260,000 after pocketing $10,000 for finishing second. Antonio Alberto had the riding call.

Donald Ming's homebred I See Visions finished a neck off the leaders in third place for trainer Vann Haywood. Jerry Lee Yoakum rode the One Famous Eagle colt out of the Dash For Cash mare Vision Of Dash. He earned $5,500 for the effort.

Completing the field were Fast Talkin Henry, Blaze Carver, Secret Courage, Just Wanna Corona, Logans Mountain and Eyem Unstopable. Jcs Who was scratched.
