SMOKE ON THE WATER WINS AQRA PRESIDENT'S SPRING FUTURITY Date Posted: 5/1/2014 12:01:41 AM Smoke On The Water, under jockey Leonardo Gonzalez, winning the AQRA President's Open Spring Futurity at Turf Paradise Monday. © Coady PhotographyPHOENIX, AZ—APRIL 28, 2014—Second fastest qualifier Smoke On The Water broke a bit tardy but jockey Leonardo Gonzalez got the SPIT CURL JESS gelding underway quickly to score his first career stakes win on Monday afternoon in the $45,980 AQRA President's Open Spring Futurity at Turf Paradise.
Conditioned by Benito Vega for owner Norma Reyes, Smoke On Water won by 1˝ lengths while completing the 300 yard course in :15.826 seconds, a 90 speed index into a 9 mph headwind. It was the second win in as many starts for the Kentucky bred out of Smokin (TB), by Smoke Glacken. Robert Gentry bred earned $22,990 to bring the $1,700 Heritage Place September yearling's two-race total to $24,657. Matthew Fales saddled Money To Burn to second place for owner/breeder Ralph and Carolyn Fales. The gelding earned $10,279 for the effort. Joe Ruiz had the riding assignment. Arizona-bred El Ice Berg finished half-a-side back in the show position for owner/breeder Juan Estrella Chavero and trainer Eloy Mendoze. The sorrel gelding earned $4,598. Completing the futurity field were Chicks Deville, Stoli Form, Koolist, Madam Foose, and Mpf Gypsy Chick. Return Home View all news |
