CR TUCKERNUCK GETS SECOND FASTEST TIME IN RICHEST RUIDOSO DERBY IN HISTORY Date Posted: 5/24/2014 10:26:51 PM Cr Tuckernuck, under jockey Berkley Packer, won the second trial and posted the second fastest qualifying time. © Gay Harris / Ruidoso DownsRUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 24, 2014—Dan and Jolene Urschel’s Cr Tuckernuck raced to his second-straight win and set the second fastest-qualifying time to the record-setting Grade 1, $943,127 Ruidoso Derby at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday afternoon.
The purse for the 400-yard Ruidoso Derby surpassed previous record of $822,753 set last year. The 10 fastest qualifiers will return on Saturday, June 7th and vie for the winner's purse. Cr Tuckernuck won the second trial with the second-fastest time of :19.547 over Valeriano Racing Stables LLC’s Super Sporting Dash, who qualified with the fourth-fastest time of :19.618. The Stacey Capps-trained Cr Tuckernuck prepared for the Ruidoso Derby trials with a one-and-one-quarter-length allowance win at Remington Park. The Jet Black Patriot gelding closed out his two year-old season by qualifying for the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park. Bred by Weetona Stanley and William Smith, Cr Tuckernuck is out of the Corona Cartel mare Fast Prize Corona. She also produced last season's Speedhorse Futurity winner Spit Like Jagger. The $100,000 Mr Jess Perry will also be run on June 7, for the first time this year in connection with the Ruidoso Derby. Preference for the Mr Jess Perry will be given to horses who raced in the trials and did not qualify for the Ruidoso Derby. Last year's Remington Park Futurity winner CORONADO CARTEL finished a close second to stakes winner Quick Dynasty in his Ruidoso Derby trial, guaranteeing him an invite to the $100,000 race. Also bred by Weetona Stanley and William Smith the earner of more than $372,000 is by Corona Cartel from the Mr Jess Perry mare First Carolina.
