The fastest qualifier from the trials on August 1 and the 7-5 favorite in the field of nine, Pyc First Prize Joe pulled away for a 1˝ -length victory in :19.611 seconds for 400 yards. Ramiro Garcia rode the Jose Aguilera-owned-and-trained 3-year-old bay gelding sired by Paint Your Wagon out of dam First Prize Joy, by Oak Tree Special. Pyc First Prize Joe had finished second in the $67,155 Rocky Mountain Derby at Arapahoe Park on July 12 heading into the Mile High trials. Bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley, Pyc First Prize Joe has won four of 12 starts. The $34,296 winner's purse boosted his career total to $71,201. Bf Storm Chaser and jockey Russell Vicchrilli was second with a neck to Jo Jo Hot Legs and jockey Francisco Giles in third. Completing the field were Nifty Fury, Red Finch, Tollie Rossel, Pinffulo, Ncc Firefly and Shawnee Kid. |
