Altoona Derby are both from the same female family. Iowa Double Gold Derby winner Ferrari James won the first trial to get the fastest time while Prized Wagon scored in the second trial to the set the second fastest time.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Prairie Meadows on Saturday, October 15th to vie for the winners' purse in the 400 yards derby final. Racing for owner Alfredo Botello and trainer Manuel Compos, Ferari James picked up his third straight win at Prairie Meadows with a half-length win in the first trial. Ridden by jockey Oscar Delgado, the gelded son of Ivory James completed the 400 yard task in :19.697 seconds, a 93 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind, to set the top qualifying mark. Bred in Oklahoma by Wetona Stanley and W.E. Smith, Ferrari James is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Ferarri Fast Prize. The second dam, Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner Fast First Prize is a half-sister to the aforementioned Prized Wagon's mother. Ferrari James has compiled a (12) 7-1-2 record and banked $107,263. Under jockey Larry Payne, Prized Wagon was a one-length winner in the second trial while stopping the clock in :19.762 seconds, a 91-speed index with a 5 mph tailwind. Coming off a third place finish in the Iowa Double Gold Derby on September 3, Prized Wagon races for owner Joel Rod Pierce. Gina Downing conditions the Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt out of First Prize Honey, by Mr Jess Perry. First Prize Honey is a half-sister to the aforementioned Fast First Prize. Robert and Karen Nunnally bred the five-time winner in Texas. Third in the Black Gold 350 Futurity last year, he has earned $168,401.
