PYC FUN N FANCY PULLS UPSET OVER IMA CHINA RUSH IN LAICO BIRD STAKES AT REMINGTON PARK

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 22, 2017—Ima China Rush prevailed in the $525,000 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park on March 25 with Pyc Fun N Fancy settling for the runner-up position.

In Saturday night’s $61,800 Laico Bird Stakes, Pyc Fun N Fancy turned the tables, winning the 330-yard race by a head over Ima China Rush.

Owned by Jose Guzman of Dallas and trained by Luz Chavira, Pyc Fun N Fancy was ridden by Daniel Torres. The 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred colt managed to make up ground on Ima China Rush who left the starting gate on the lead. The pair pulled away from their rivals with Pyc Fun N Fancy getting the head victory in 16.941 seconds over a fast track.

The top two runners in the race for Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds, in terms of the betting, Pyc Fun N Fancy was at 5-2 odds while Ima China Rush was the heavy favorite at 3-5 odds. Black Gold Okie was three-quarters of a length behind the winner, finishing third.

Pyc Fun N Fancy paid $7.60 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.80 to show. Ima China Rush paid $2.40 to place and $2.20 to show. Black Gold Okie returned $7.20 to show.

Winning for the second time in three career starts, all this season at Remington Park, Pyc Fun N Fancy pulled in $34,680 in winning the Laico Bird Stakes.

Bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley, Pyc Fun N Fancy is by Pyc Paint Your Wagon from the Mr Jess Perry mare First Prize Fancy. He has now earned $129,669.

The Laico Bird Stakes is named after the 1967 All American Futurity winner and American Quarter Horse Association World Champion who was bred in Oklahoma and campaigned over her career by Jimmy Jones, of Norman, Okla. Jones was on hand to present the trophy to the connections of Pyc Fun N Fancy.

This was the first Laico Bird Stakes win for Guzman and for Torres. Chavira won the race in 2014 when he saddled PYB Place Your Bet to the win.

Sunday afternoon racing, featuring the eighth Extreme Racing Day with exotic animal competition interspersed between the American Quarter Horse events. Presented by the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, the Extreme Racing Day starts Sunday at 1pm. All times Central.
