STANLEY CARTEL QUALIFIES FOR GRADE 2 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DERBY Date Posted: 12/2/2024 4:18:02 PM Stanley Cartel, under jockey Armando Cervantes, winning the second trial on Sunday © Amber Mendez LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA–DECEMBER 2, 2024–Dunn Ranch and Weetona Stanley-owned Stanley Cartel was back in action after his perfect racing record was spoiled when he finished out of the money in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby final on December 10. Stanley Cartel, a colt by Pyc Paint Your Wagon, entered the Super Derby final with victories in each of his five career starts. However, he was slow leaving the gate, then brushed and by then he was far behind the leaders. Entering his Grade 2, $158,150 Southern California Derby trial with five wins from six career starts, Stanley Cartel got back in the winning column with a ½ length win over Betzabe Murillo's Try Harder, who also entered this trial after running in the Super Derby final. "Stanley Cartel, he just had a rough go at the start in the Super Derby," Arrossa added. "He didn't get his break. He got closed off, got dirt in his face for the first time so a lot of first for him on that night. I was proud of him bouncing back. He showed his class and Armando did a great job getting him away from the gate and getting him lined up." Stanley Cartel is out of First Prize Fancy from the great Stanley family of broodmares that trace back to First Prize Rose, the dam of the legendary First Down Dash. Ridden by Armando Cervantes, Stanley Cartel covered the distance in 19.880, which was the third-fastest clocking of the night.
