OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—P.J. Burger of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Fancy Man Perks (Perky) turned in the fastest time in the 1D Shoothout in Oklahoma City, a :15.423 to claim the trophy saddled from Teners Western Wear.

Burger also collected $4,031 on the weekend (August 15-17)on behalf of Perky's owners, Daniel and Sue Rudy of Belchertown, Mass.

Perky is a five-year-old gelding by DASH FOR PERKSout of the Easy Lela mare Hand It To Lela. He was bred by LADY BUG STALLION STATION.

DASH FOR PERKS is one of the leading barrel stallions in the country.

The Rudy's bought the gelding as a two-year-old. They had originally wanted to send him to Burger's mother-in-law, Mary, but because of her commitments to the rodeo circuit Burger instead suggested her daughter-in-law.

Burger who ran early in the 1D Shootout said she was surprised her time held.

"Every drag had five nice horses in it", she said. "The 30 that made it back were really topping it off in the finals."

She added that her early draw also played well for her mentally.

"I like being at the beginning or at the very end," she explained. "if you're up at the beginning, you can put the pressure on, and if your' ate the end, you put your game face on because you know what you need to do. I like the pressure. I thrive on that kind of stuff. I think that's what gives you the edge and keep you going and getting better."

Burger, who is sponsored by Oxygen, Prime Performance Nutrition and B&B Machine Shop in Pauls Valley, has a busy fall ahead of her. She and Perky are sitting fifth in the standings to make the Prairie Circuit Finals in the Women's Professional Rodeo Association ranks. They also have the AQHA World Show and World Championship Derby on their agenda.
