Photo Credit: Dustin Orona Photography OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 1, 2009—Friday’s $27,500 optional claiming/allowance feature went to Jess Jones as he came up with a late move to just catch Heza Smooth Gambler at the line for victory.
Owned by J.D. Anderson of Froid, Montna and trained by Monty Brooks, Jess Jones rallied late under Cody Jensen to win by a head. Heza Smooth Gambler had the lead but was relegated to runner-up status at the line. NCC Absolute used a tremendous start to get in position early, holding on for third. Bred at Lady Bug Stallion Station by Fred Stanley, Jess Jones covered 350 yards in 17.61 seconds. The wagering favorite at 5-2 odds, Jess Jones won his second consecutive race this season and paid $7 to win, $4 to place and $2.60 to show. Heza Smooth Gambler returned $5.80 to place and $2.40 to show. NCC Absolute paid $4.60 to show. An Oklahoma-bred 5-year-old horse by Mr Jess Perry from the Disco Jerry mare Disco Del Rey, Jess Jones won his fourth career race from 17 attempts. All of the wins have taken place at Remington Park. The $14,484 winner’s share of the purse Friday night pushed Jess Jones’ overall earnings to $61,017. Remington Park opens at 9am on Saturday as Kentucky Derby simulcasting from Churchill Downs in Louisville, beginning at 9:30am. Remington Park’s live program, featuring the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes, will begin at 5pm. |
