TWO STANLEY-BREDS QUALIFY TO $100,000 MR JESS PERRY
Challon, under jockey Cesar Gomez, posted the largest winning margin in Sunday's Ruidoso Derby(G1) trials.
© Gay Harris / Ruidoso DownsRUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 29, 2016—Two Stanley-Bred 3-year-olds qualified to the $100,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday.
The 400-yard race, for the second 10 fastest qualifiers from the $1.04 million Ruidoso Derby(G1) trials, will be contested on Saturday, June 11th.
Alexia Mehrle's lightly raced Challon rolled to an impressive 2 ¾ length win in trial #12 to get the 13th fastest time from 134 of the best 3-year-olds in the nation who participated in 14 trials.
The son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon would have easily ended up in the record setting final but the wind turned from a head wind into a tailwind for the final two trails, with six horses qualifying from those races.
Kasey Willis conditions Challon who is out of stakes-placed Fast Prize Tracy ($40,960), by Shazoom. On Friday Fast Prize Tracy's 2-year-old by Apolltical Jess won his trial and qualified for the $1 million Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity final (see related story) and on Saturday her 2-year-old by Mr Jess Perry qualified to the $100,000-Guaranteed Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational.
Fast Prize Tracy is a sister to world record holder and Grade 1 West Texas Futurity winner Fast Prize Zoom ($192,875) and she is the dam of Cherokee Nation Stakes winner Spit Curl Trey ($51,660), etc.
A winner of three of five career starts, Challon was a finalist in the $200,000 All American Juvenile last year.
Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity runner-up Ferarri Gt finished second in the fastest trial on Sunday to qualify to the Mr Jess Perry with the 17th fastest time.
AQHA Racing Champion trainer Paul Jones conditions the Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt out of Ferarri First Prize, by Mr Jess Perry. Ridden by Salvador Martinez, Ferarri Gt has compiled a (10) 3-3-1 record and earned nearly $130,000. He was also a finalist in the Texas Classic Futurity(G1) and the Harrah's Entertainment Futuirty(G1).
Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith bred both of the 3-year-olds in Oklahoma.
